Know How to Keep Rats Away
According to Wikipedia: ” Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents of the superfamily Muroidea. “True rats” are members of the genus Rattus , the most important of which to humans are the black rat, Rattus rattus , and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus . Many members of other rodent genera and families are also referred to as rats, and share many characteristics with true rats.
That being said, rats, when they have invaded your home or other space are one of most repulsive pests imaginable. Below are some interesting facts about rats and what each could mean to keeping rats away from your home:
1) Rats have excellent memories. Once they learn a navigation route, they won’t forget it – rats are creatures of habit. Once they learn where a food source is located and the easiest route to getting to it, they will travel the same route over and over.
Disrupting a rat’s routine may encourage it to leave the area and look for easier opportunities. Removing food sources, blocking routes of access and making those routes undesirable for the rat to travel can be a major step toward getting rid of rats.
2) A rat’s teeth never stop growing. Rats are known to chew through and destroy non-food materials in an effort to keep their teeth filed down. Rats have been reported to chew through wood, cement, aluminum and other metals.
Blocking a rat’s route of access or daily traveling path can be a challenge. Because a rat has sharp teeth and a propensity to chew through hardened barriers, making a traveling route irritating and repulsive to a rat may be more effective than physically blocking it. The all natural rat repellents from Shake-Away use a proprietary blend of organic oils that are scientifically formulated to aggravate the senses of all rodents and may drive rats away from the area.
3) Rats are opportunistic omnivores. Rats will eat almost anything and will, when necessary, kill small prey such as insects, small birds and water animals for food.
The best defense against rat invasion is the removal of food sources. Rats are clever and persistent so keeping your space free of potential food sources may not be easy, but it is essential.
Because rats rely on a keen sense of smell to find food sources, placing food trash and stored food (including pet food) in air-tight sealed containers is necessary. To add an additional layer of protection, a scent-based rodent repellent placed in the are in which potential food sources are stored is a good idea.
A rat invasion of your home is the stuff of nightmares. Fortunately, learning about rats and their behavior can give you the upper hand in getting rid of rats and keeping them away.
