The Incredibly Athletic Squirrel
Squirrels are the animal world’s acrobat. Fast moving, a squirrel’s ability to balance on the thinnest wire is nearly unbelievable. More, the balance of a squirrel is nearly matched by its climbing prowess! Here are 5 very interesting facts about squirrels:
1 The word “squirrel” comes from skiouros, a Greek word meaning “the shadow tail” (“Skia” means “shadow” and “oura” means “tail”). Have you ever seen a squirrel create its own shade from the sun by placing its tail up over its back and staying in its shadow?
2 Squirrels have their own sign language. The seeming random twitches of a squirrel’s tail may actually be a communication to another squirrel. Tail movements, as well as a variety of verbal clicks and squeaks, make up the communciations of squirrels.
3. Squirrels know how to trick potential food thieves. It is estimated that squirrels can lose up to 25% of their buried food cache to other animals. To help combat the food thievery, squirrels practice “deceptive caching” during which they pretend to bury food to trick other animals into looking in the wrong spot.
4. There are 285 species of squirrels. Squirrels are found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Squirrels come in a variety of colors including red, brown, white and black
5. Squirrels can run up to 20 MPH. In addition to being incredibly fast over short distances, squirrels can leap distances of 20 feet. Long, powerful and double-jointed hind legs enable the squirrel in their feats of animal athleticism.
